Ask Kenny May 2021

I know it's been a long time, but I got time today. I won't post the question because it was a bit too personal for the innanets, but below is the answer. (Feel free to send in your questions or topics.)

Mental illness is very real and shouldn't be taken lightly, but also the damage that might be caused by those mentally ill during episodes or even willful choices should not simply be ignored. That person needs and should receive love and support however that may look, but what about the people who were affected?

Even for people without mental illness or possibly without the knowledge of an illness, trauma is possible because human emotion is real. What happens when the mentally ill cause trauma? This is not vilify anyone or make light of mental health because it is health, but we often sweep under the rug the damage some may cause and diminish what the other parties experienced all the name of mental health. Doing so even unknowingly perpetuates this unaddressed issue.

My people we are called to be our keepers of our brothers and sisters for sure, but someone's will to live or willful decisions do not rest on anyone but the person alone unless that person is completely without his or her own self- control and sound mind. I don't claim to be a mental health expert off a few Psychology credits, but I've seen some things. To those who have gone unheard or have swept your experiences under the rug as to not be seen as insensitive or awful, I am thinking of you and praying for you today. 1 Peter 5:7 tells us to cast ALL our cares on Him because He cares for us, YES, that includes you but in order for Him to truly help you, you have to go to Him and trust that He will.

If no one has shown you today I love you, but God loves you better.

Be blessed.

Wait, before you go, mental illness is real so if you are suffering this is not to discourage you. Do what you need to do to be whole, but be mindful that we all affect one another be it directly or indirectly. To those who are loved ones of those suffering, your experience, pain, and trauma is valid. Do what you need to do to be whole even if other people do not understand. This is not a ticket to be selfish by the way. Lastly, everything is not a mental illness and some things that are illness are not always chronic, we are human and have emotions and that is okay, but mental health is relevant to all and we need to be good stewards of it. Whatever box you check or leave unchecked, take care of yourself.
